It’s raining here in Paris but I don’t care. The cobblestones are gleaming, it’s early and it’s quiet. The streets are empty apart from the odd local rushing past with baguette-full arms (they got up a lot earlier than us for the oh so tasty carbs). I’m wandering with my other half, brasserie hopping and partaking in the mandatory people watching activity the Parisians do so well. It’s cold, so I need layers. Not surprising for February, that’s why I packed 3 coats (pausing for a moment of justified smugness). I’ve managed to squeeze in a black faux leather jacket and 2 duster coats in my favourite shades of grey and camel. The camel duster coat is a new addition. I spotted it on the Top Shop website and fell instantly for the caramel hue, the tailored longline cut, wide lapels and simple belt tie. That’s actually what I wanted to talk to you about – my new found admiration for a hard working camel coat.

Along with blue jeans and a white shirt, a camel coat is now a one of my favourite and most worn wardrobe basics. I don’t think I need to do a hard sell on this but hear me out in case you don’t have one (yet). I’ve been thinking about this and my top 3 reasons for investing in a camel coat are:

  1. Camel coats aren’t just for the colder seasons. Think about it, whether it’s a Mac or trenchcoat in spring, a biker jacket in summer, a swing coat in autumn or duster coat in winter, the camel coat has year-round appeal.
  2. As a shade, camel is warming and flattering and works with most colours and tones. I like to pair mine with other neutrals like grey, white, black and navy.
  3. Casual or smart, with heels or flats, a camel coat pulls an outfit together. You could be wearing anything underneath that coat, it wouldn’t matter, you’ll still look good! I love a camel coat – denim situation with a pair of girlfriend jeans, a crisp shirt and clean white sneakers.

Whether you wear yours oversized, fitted or belted, a camel coat is a chic option that doesn’t disappoint. Neither will Paris.
