It’s a testament to their designs and a legacy that’s sure to last, the oversized silhouette long favoured by Vetements, Balenciaga, Acne, Stella McCartney and Celine is here to stay. While Vetements appear to move away from oversized hoodies (surely there’s more money to be made?) the oversized jumper reigns supreme this winter.
And I admit, I’m a huge fan of the huge knit. Because right now I could happily live in one. Personally speaking I can’t get enough of the chunky necks, balloon sleeves and extra long cuffs.
For me the key thing is to embrace the ‘it’s bigger than me’ look and make it intentional. Yes I’ve consciously chosen to hide under the jumper as opposed to drowning in wool standing up. I think the tricky thing about wearing an oversized jumper is figuring out how to wear it. So I’ve pulled together my top tips and 5 outfit ideas for you, you know to take the pain out of thinking. It’s nearly Christmas after all…

4 Tips on How To Wear The Oversized Jumper
1. Size up. Ok this is probably an obvious one but if the jumper isn’t already big and baggy go for something 1 or 2 sizes up, or more. It will depend on the fit so try it on and see how it sits. Don’t even bother worrying about the label size, just get the look right. As the oversized look has been popular for some time now, most brands have oversized pieces specifically made to look big. Oh and check out oversized shirts, jumper dresses, trousers and duvet coats too this autumn/winter. They look amazing especially when layers are king.
2. Wear mens knitwear. Men’s sweaters are a great alternative to an oversized women’s jumper. They’re especially useful when you’re not inspired by the women’s options in-store or you just want to wear something different to everybody else.
3. Tuck it! Do a half tuck at the side of your jeans, trousers or skirt to break up the long expanse of knit and show off your waist. Leave the rest of the sweater out to hang long and loose at the back. Or use a belt over the jumper to frame your waist, the belted look is very on trend right now.
4. Play with proportions. There are many ways to wear an oversized sweater. There really aren’t any hard and fast rules so just play around with whatever you have in your wardrobe and see what you like. Personally I like wearing mine with midi skirts, wide leg jeans and over check trousers. I would also say that heels (even small kitten heels) are a good idea when you’re wearing oversized anything. They help to balance out the look and elongate the leg so you might want to whip out your sock boots or sling backs. Check out some of my favourite outfit combinations below.
