This month I catch up with Lucy Connelly from Florals & Corals. Read on to find out more about the Glasgow based fashion blogger, how she’s nailed streetstyle photography, her favourite collaborations and Irish dancing (totally unexpected!).
Name: Lucy Connelly Based: Glasgow Blog: www.floralsandcorals.com
Hi Lucy, thanks for joining us for a chat! We love your blog floralsandcorals.com, tell us when did you start blogging and why? How did you come up with your blog name?
Initially I started blogging in the summer of 2013 after spending time in Thailand, with the intent of covering travel and interiors. However as I was in the final year of studying Politics at University, I didn’t officially launch the blog until mid-2014. It was during this time that I developed a love for creating streetstyle content and discovered how much more I enjoyed sharing my daily looks.
As for the name, it originally derived from my love of shabby chic interiors, which is, of course, a stark contrast to my minimal dress sense. However I think the name still holds relevance in my daily lifestyle with my flower obsession, which you will see if you watch my Instagram Stories!
You feature amazing streetstyle photography on your blog and social media channels. Who takes your photos? What are your tips for taking great shots?
My partner Chris takes most of my shots. He isn’t a professional photographer but he has taken this journey alongside me and has invested a lot of time and effort into helping me and I think we make a good team.
In terms of tips, you would really have to ask him but I’d say just be confident and try to walk and move more because I always find that my favourite images are the ones filled with movement. They resonate because they have that realness aspect.
What’s the best thing about being a blogger?
The community! I have met so many incredible and inspiring people from all over the world who I would never have met if I hadn’t started doing this as a hobby. Also I have been blessed with so many opportunities that I have been able to learn from.
You work and blog part-time, right? How do you juggle it all?! Would you consider moving into blogging full time?
In my opinion I don’t juggle it well! I work 2 and a half days during the week and blog almost every other free second that I have. The ways that I attempt to manage it are mostly by getting up early and trying to manage my time as best I can. I would consider going full time but I think being based in Glasgow and working mostly from home, that I may find it difficult and possibly lonely.
Do you think you’ll do Vlogging any time in the future?
I would love to Vlog! I love watching daily lifestyle vloggers and have considered vlogging our trip to America in a few weeks. My boyfriend is constantly telling me that I should do it.
What’s your favourite collaboration? Who / what brand would you love to work with in the future?
I love all the collaborations I have done and I am so grateful for the opportunities but I think my favourite would be the collab that I produced with Gap in February this year. The archive collection fit in perfectly with my style and I loved shooting the incredible pieces for a brand I have loved for many years.
In the future, I would love to work with more brands that I love and wear daily such as Levi’s and also do more with beauty and lifestyle brands to broaden my content.
Lucy you have amazing taste and a signature style! Where do you get your inspiration? What are your wardrobe essentials?
Thank you! I love everything French and so I get lots of inspiration from the classic basics that Parisians wear but I also like to add an edge to that and bring in more of my personality. As I’m all about the basics I would say you always need a good pair of classic cut denims, a blazer and simple but well made white t-shirt.
What key trends will you be wearing this spring/summer?
I’m not hugely into trends, I tend to stay consistent with my style and add little pieces here and there. When shopping for spring summer I always stick to classic basics – the denim short, a white shirt etc.
Tell us about the most expensive item in your wardrobe?
In terms of bags it is probably my Gucci Dionysus and for shoes my Balenciaga boots. I love and wear both frequently, so I can safely say that they have been worth the investment!
What’s your beauty regime and must-have beauty products?
I like to keep things simple. I use a cleansing balm, moisturiser and an oil every day. I love Eve Lom Products, Clinique and most recently I’ve been trying out Kiehls and loving their midnight recovery oil and ultra facial cream.
Tell us something we don’t know about you!
From an early age up until I was in University I was an Irish dancer! I think people who meet me now often find that strange given the contrast between my minimal style and the over the top extravagance of Irish dance but I loved it! It was a huge part of my life for so long and it has definitely helped shape me into the strong and determined person that I am today.
How would your friends describe you in 3 words?
This was a difficult one, so I decided to ask Chris to describe me in three words as he probably knows me better than anyone. After some deliberation he came back with ‘Motivated, Stubborn & Chic.’ I suppose if I’m honest, I am happy with those!
What can we expect from Florals & Corals in 2017?
In 2017 you can expect more focus on lifestyle and daily life on my Instagram stories and blog, alongside my daily outfit shots on Instagram. Also more travel content and some possible travel blogs!
