I’m having one of those weeks where I’ve got MAJOR wardrobe envy and want everyone else’s clothes. I’m just so sick of mine. Plus I can’t flick down (ok, stalk) Instagram without seeing somebody wearing check. I’ve seen plaid, Prince William print, houndstooth, gingham, bold print and tartan. I shouldn’t be surprised really, it’s set to be the print of spring / summer 2017. Cue runway recap…
Don’t be Fooled, This Is No Boring Print
Next season traditional black and white check features heavily in the S/S collections of Dolce & Gabbana, Caroline Herrera, Jasper Conran, Tome, Altuzurra, and Toga. I love how they’ve paired it with florals, gold embellishments, ruffles and contrasting gingham.
Diane von Furstenberg, Prada and House of Holland are taking things to another level next season with brightly coloured plaid splashed across their collections, bringing the classic pattern to life.
3 Ways To Wear
- Wear one piece – it could be a dress, a shirt layered over a long sleeve t-shirt and jeans, or a pair of patterned boots
- Wear it as outerwear (that way it’s easier to take off to change your look) – wear a loose check coat over wide leg trousers, just add a belt at the waist for definition
- Wear the pattern head to toe, say a skirt and light sweater. Use contrasting colours and large print to create drama.
As patterns go this isn’t one I’m usually into but I’m determined to find the perfect check addition to my closet. I reckon a chunky plaid top with voluminous sleeves or a bold print skirt could work. What do you think?
